Eligibility: The Fred Rogers Memorial Scholarship is open only to graduate students of accredited universities.  Applicants must demonstrate commitment through coursework or experience to a combination of at least two of the following fields:

  • early childhood education
  • child development/child psychology
  • film/television production
  • music
  • animation
  • production of cross-platform entertainment
Applicants must also have the ultimate goal of working in children's media and may apply for support in one of the following four areas:
  • Research on the relationship between children's use of media and learning or children's use of media and personal growth.
  • Development of program concepts or extended development of creative elements of an existing concept: e.g. design of puppets, scripts, storyboards, characters, music, etc.
  • Development of a new media for children concept or project related to: mobile application, web based project, interactive/ toys, immersive experience, physical installation, etc.
  • Pittsburgh-area college students only: Development of a new media for children concept or project related to: mobile application, web based project, interactive/ toys, immersive experience, physical installation, etc
Entrants must download an application form and submit a proposed detailed plan and budget of how the scholarship funds will be used.

From the Website: The Television Academy Foundation's Mister Rogers Memorial Scholarship Program awards four $10,000 scholarships to graduate students to support and encourage them to pursue a career in children’s media and further the values and principles of Fred Rogers’ work. The scholarships are project-based and are not to be used for tuition. In addition to the monetary award, successful applicants are mentored by children’s programming professionals during the academic year. Mentors are identified from the Television Academy’s Los Angeles or New York membership and assigned based on proximity to the recipient. The mentor and the recipient will communicate in person, by phone and by e-mail on a regular basis.
